Treasurer’s Report from the July 2014 Business Assembly

This is the first time since I have been treasurer that I can report to you that our prudent reserve is within our bylaw-mandated range of 40 – 60%.  We are currently at 46%.

For those of you who are Green dots or haven’t been here in awhile; for the past 3½ years, our prudent reserve has been in the 70s and 80s.  While your board and Ways $ Means committee have been working diligently to bring our projected income and expenses into balance for the purpose of reducing our too-high prudent reserve, we would prefer to keep it closer to 60%.

So for the first time, I’m asking you to dig a little deeper into your purse or wallet as you make your 7th Tradition contributions in the coming months, in order to make the minimum suggested donation of $3.00 or more.  If you are abstinent today because of OA, think about what your recovery means to you and give as if your life depends on it.  As a program friend of mine is fond of saying, “I owe a debt I can never repay”.

As you know, OA is fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.  I didn’t understand that second part when I first joined OA…but it means that we can only accept funds from members of our fellowship.  We cannot accept donations from any other outside source.

If you’ve never read through the 7th Tradition pamphlet, I encourage you to do so.  It is downloadable at  It’s really quite informative in explaining all the ways in which we can contribute to repay OA for all we’ve been given…monetarily, as well as with our time and energy.

I would also encourage you to ask at your meetings if your treasurer is contributing to Region 8 and WSO, and if not, please encourage them to do so.  If they say they contribute to IG, and that the intergroup passes it on to Region and WSO, ask your IG rep to follow up with the intergroup treasurer to see if that is being done.  I’ve seen a lack of communication result in each party believing the other was taking the action when in fact, neither was.

Much of our budget is spent for travel expenses for your trusted servants (the Region board and committee chairs), to attend these business assemblies/recovery conventions, carrying the message of recovery to all corners of our region.  Several times a motion has come before the body (again, just last weekend) to reduce the number of business assemblies we have each year from three down to two.  And once again the motion was defeated, so it is obvious that the members of Region 8 wish to continue having three assemblies/recovery conventions a year, and as travel expenses continue to rise, so will our expenses.

I believe we can continue to live within our budget, but only if we continue to be the generous fellowship that I’ve been privileged to work with for the past 3½ years.

Thank you for all of the service you do for our fellowship, and thank you for allowing me to do this service!

Patti Schumacher
Region 8 Treasurer
